Why Hire a Licensed Electrician
These days we all are looking for ways to save money in the most clever and creative ways possible. We become DIYers, we call Dad, we call our buddy with a garage full of tools and ask for help after we’ve gotten sticker shock by an estimate on work we need to be done. We say “For that price, I’ll learn how to do it!”
There are many home projects that you can definitely take on, no doubt about it. But when it comes to doing work on your homes electrical system is really another story. Some mistakes can cost you more to fix than if you would have paid for a professional electrician in the first place. And “yes” it does happen…we’ve had 2 calls just this week due to some wonderfully motivated DIYers, who are now wishing they had not done it themselves. So consider your safety and your pocketbook and pick up the phone before you pick up your tools. Here are some other reasons why you should hire a licensed electrician.
SAFETY
Safety is a real concern. Between 2010 and 2014, U.S. municipal fire departments responded to an average of 45,210 home structure fires involving electrical failure or malfunction. These fires caused annual averages of 420 civilian deaths, 1,370 civilian injuries, and $1.4 billion in property damage.
All licensed electricians must meet their state requirements of taking continuing education classes in order to stay up to date on current code changes and safety reminders. The safety of your home means the safety of your loved ones including the four-legged ones.
Prior to hiring any company, be sure to verify that the company holds a current electrical license. It will literally take 1 or 2 minutes of your time and may alleviate a lot of headache in the future. Simply visit www.ncbeec.org and choose “find a licensed contractor”. Then just type in the company name to view their credentials. Take note of the licensing level as well. Many companies only hold a “limited” or perhaps “intermediate” license level, but “unlimited” is the highest level that can be earned in our trade, as it requires substantially more knowledge and experience. If you’re looking for the best then “unlimited” is the gold standard.
INSURANCE & INSPECTIONS
The insurance carried by an electrician covers your home during the electrical work being performed. Your homeowner’s insurance requires you to use a licensed electrician who can apply for permits and pass a final inspection when required. This is all designed to protect you and your family from improperly done electrical work.
PEACE OF MIND
Knowing your home is safe, and all your electrical system is up to code and that you are covered while the work is being performed gives real peace of mind. At Right Electrical Services, we warranty our work. So if problems arise a month or two later, you can rest assured we will stand behind our work and resolve the problem. When selling your home, you will have no issues with an inspector or insurance company because the work was done by a quality licensed electrician.

It sure is nice to know that a licensed electrician’s insurance covers your home during the electrical work they are hired to do. My dad recently told me that he’s been hearing a low buzzing sound in his basement, and he thinks it has something to do with the wiring. I’ll be sure to advise him to get in touch with a reputable residential electrician that will get the job done and will cover him and his house should any mishaps happen during the project.
Absolutely! While I’m sure your dad is a very capable man, you can truly never be too careful when it comes to electrical repairs. Getting in touch with a licensed, reputable residential technician is truly the best way to go. Thanks for your comment!
There are a ton of reasons why it is important to make sure that you are hiring a licensed electrician to look over your home. As the article points out, safety is definitely one of those reasons. A good electrician will be able to easily determine when there is a problem with your electrical set up and determine the safest solution to fixing it.
That’s right, Duncan! When it comes to electrical repairs, you can never be too careful! Electrical repair is typically not the place to try your hand at DIY projects! Hiring a knowledgable, licensed electrician is definitely the way to go! Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for helping me understand that the insurance that the electrician holds will cover any issue or damage that might occur during the process. I will definitely ask about their insurance first before hiring them to have peace of mind. We just need their services because the electrical wiring in our basement has been damaged by a rodent this evening.
Our pleasure, Millie! It’s very important to ask about insurance that the electrician holds to cover issues and damages. You can never be too careful when it comes to electrical repair! Thank you for your comment!
I love what you said about knowing that your electrical system is up to code to give you peace of mind. I think that hiring an electrician service is the best way to ensure the functionality of any commercial building. My friend is thinking about starting a business, so it’ll be important to hire a professional electrician to make sure everything in his building is running smoothly.
Absolutely! Business owners already deal with a significant amount of stress on a day to day basis and we’d hate to imagine the added headache of not making the decision to hire a licensed electrician to ensure the functionality of their commercial properties. Thanks for your comment!
I agree that safety is a big reason why you should hire a professional electrician. It’s scary that so many homes have had a fire because of an electrical failure, like you said. Having someone professional who understands how to do repairs or installations correctly will help you prevent that from happening to you.
Yes! Hiring a licensed electrician is a huge preventative safety measure! Sometimes it can make all the difference in keeping people and their properties safe! Thanks for your comment!
It surprised me when you said that electrical fires affect about 45,000 homes each year due to failure or malfunction! I think that since there are so many safety hazards associated with electrical work, it would be best to leave it to professionals. My husband and I are noticing that the outlets in our living room aren’t working when we plug things into them, even though the circuits seem to be working everywhere else in the house. We’ll have to find a professional electrical service that can use their training and experience to identify and fix the problem safely for us.
There are ample of benefits in hiring the licensed electrician but the biggest advantage of hiring them is they provide you safety which is great and big thing as without safety there is nothing in the world. The top electrician provide you safety and insurance which is really good deal while hiring them.
I’m needing to get some wiring done around my house and need to hire the right electrician to help me. Thank out for pointing out that when you hire a licensed electrician can ensure you that it will be done safely. I’ll have to do some research and find the best electrician in my area.
Research is key, Ellie! We’d also encourage you not only to check out that an electrician possesses the required credentials to conduct electrical repairs and electrical installations on your home but to take a look out their reviews as well! While making sure they’re a licensed electrician is a must, having an idea of their previous customer’s satisfaction in their work can also help your decision to hire them. For example, at Right Electrical Services we pride ourselves on our great customer feedback! We make sure that our customer’s satisfaction in our work is completely met. You can check out our reviews to see what you should be looking for when hiring your next electrician!
Hiring someone who’s licensed is definitely a must for our lighting. We’re hoping to put new lights in our basement, so I’ll be sure to check this. Like you said, it’s the best way to make sure our kids and dog are safe while they’re working.
Absolutely, Silas! It’s so simple to keep your family safe and ensure quality electrical work by checking out an electrical contractor before you hire!
You mentioned that electrical failure leads to 420 deaths between 2010 and 2014! I agree that it’s important to hire a licensed electrician. My sister is starting to build her own house, and I know that this information will come in handy for her one day! I’ll pass this knowledge along so she can start looking for an electrician in her area.
We’re glad you’ll be passing this information along to your family, Kate! It’s important to share such vital information with family and friends! The risks of not hiring a licensed electrician in your area are extremely high!
I thought it was great that the article mentioned checking to ensure that an electrician has a current electrical license before hiring them. I have been thinking about replacing some of the lighting fixtures in my home. It would be safer to hire a licensed electrician to help me complete this project.
Absolutely, Dean! You’d be surprised how many people out there will operate under false licenses in order to get your business! This puts your home in great risk! It’s important to check on the licensing of any electrician you’re considering to make sure they are reputable! You can check licensing numbers for an electrician with the NC Board Examiners of Electrical Contractors to verify that they are in fact a licensed electrician within North Carolina!
It’s crazy that there were over 45 thousand electrical fires in the U.S. between 2010 and 2014. My husband and I have been having problems with our home’s circuit breaker and were thinking about trying to fix it ourselves. Now that I know the huge risks involved with that, I think we’ll make the safe choice by leaving it to a professional.
Yes, Daphne! Unfortunately many homeowners aren’t aware of the risks! 45 thousand electrical fires in the U.S. between 2010 and 2014 is a very surprising statistic for this very reason! A licensed electrician for electrical repairs and residential electrical work can give you peace of mind!
I liked your advice about picking up the phone before you pick up your tools. I could see how it would be crucial to have a licensed electrician help you before you try to do it yourself! I’ll be sure to do this if I ever have any electric problems with my home! I’d imagine that it would be so important to find an electrician for a commercial building. I can’t imagine how bad it would be if something went wrong there.
Yes, Kate, you’re so right! It is not only important to note the importance of a licensed electrician for residential work but equally so for commercial projects! If projects are handled irresponsibly in commercial services, you’re not only placing yourself in danger but employees and the public as well!
I agree that safety is a big reason for getting a professional electrician. They will understand the right state requirements for safety. They will understand codes to make sure the wiring is done correctly and safely too, like you said.

I like that you mentioned that insurance carried by an electrician covers your home during the electrical work. I have been needing to redo some of the wirings in an older home. I should try hiring commercial electricians to help get it done professionally and safely.

Thanks for explaining why you should always get a licensed electrician. I actually didn’t know that an unlimited is the highest level of license that could be earned. I’m interested to learn how the license is obtained so you have a better idea of how qualified the electrician could be. //www.centralmt.com/electrical
I liked that you said that it is most important to hire a licensed electrician professional to conduct electrical repairs in order to avoid potential fire and damages. I have been thinking about trying to repair my electrical work myself but I have been worried that I will get injured. I will be sure to hire a professional now that I realize that I could potentially cause damage to my home and my family since I don’t have any education or experience.//expertelectricwinnipeg.com/services/
I appreciate that you mentoined that our home will be covered by an electrician who is properly insured. That sounds like the best way to ensure our safety. Thanks for stopping by!
My aunt’s apartment building has a probelm with its wiring and electrical infrastructure, which is why we’re both looking for a commercial electrical contractor that may do the job successfully. I’ll keep in mind to inform my aunt that she should consider a service that is insured and licensed. Thnak you for also elaborating here that there are different levels of licensing.
As you mentioned, there are some home projects that can be DIY, but electrical should not be one of them. We are looking to add some outlets in our master bedroom, as there is only one currently in there. I will have to let my husband know that it would be a good idea to hire a professional electrician for that job. //www.coleyelectrical.com.au/

It’s great that you talked about electricians and how they know how to avoid electrical accidents. Recently, there was a huge storm, and we think our home suffered from it. My wife and I believe some of our electrical outlets got damaged, so we’ll be sure to look for a professional’s help.
