Light switch not working? You may need an electrician

Have you ever gone to plug in your hair dyer and nothing happens? Or flipped on the light switch in your living room and the light doesn’t come on? Your first instinct may be you think your hairdryer has finally died or you need new light bulbs in your light fixture. But after trying another outlet the dryer turns right on and after replacing the bulbs the light still doesn’t come on.

Troubleshooting an Electrical Problem

These two scenarios could actually have a few different reasons for happening. So do some simple safe troubleshooting. First, check the circuit breakers to make sure the breaker is not tripped or if the fuse is good. If all looks good in the panel box, try resetting your GFCI outlets. If you do not know which GFCI outlet your non-working outlet or switch is connected to reset all of them.  Simply push the reset buttons. Some new GFCI outlets will have a red light indicating when the outlet is tripped and needs to be reset.

Still not working? Need an electrician for outlet repair?

What do you after following these simple safe troubleshooting steps, but your outlet or switch is still not working? It is time to call a licensed electrician. Sometimes these problems may be a loose wire or a symptom of a larger problem. Loose electrical connections are not only annoying if it causes the device to stop working, but this most importantly is a fire hazard. So calling a professional electrical technician is your most logical safe decision.

A study conducted by The Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.gov) estimates that 48 people die every year from accidental electrocutions involving residential wiring, panel boards, circuit breakers, and electrical outlets.
